In 2010, the Cal Haines Tribute Trio was formed to honor the powerful influence of jazz piano composers whose works compel listeners and musicians alike. Pianist John Rangel, bassist Michael Glynn and drummer Cal Haines reach deep into the essence of this music, focusing on the composer’s original arrangements. The yearlong concert series kicks off May 13 with a Tribute to Horace Silver, at Albuquerque’s dedicated performance space The Outpost. Each month, the Tribute Trio presents a different composer and each concert is hosted in a different place, either in Albuquerque or Santa Fe. In April 2011, the tour will complete and come full-circle back to The Outpost with original compositions inspired by the tribute composers. The tribute concerts include an educational perspective for jazz lovers and the next generation of jazz instrumentalists. John Rangel, a dynamic composer, pianist and teacher is well-versed in the jazz piano vocabulary and brings tremendous insight into the history of jazz pianists. Michael Glynn contributes his extraordinary ability to combine classical training with the swing of jazz that elevates the bassline in whatever he plays. Cal Haines takes a lifetime of dedication to the drums and rhythmic interpretation to new levels through performing with the trio. Plan to enjoy the complete concert series with your friends.
